Hostels & Accommodation
Youth Hostels / Backpacker Accommodation
Hostels are a great low cost option when you're travelling. They come in many forms:
YHA Hostels - These tend to be clean, well run, and well located hostels. Although they can be more expensive than other local independent places.
Large City Hostels- These are usually centrally located, with good facilities such as a bar, internet cafe, tour booking service, with a number of dorm options from double rooms to large dorms of 12+ travellers (beware of snorers!)
Small/Boutique Hostels - These smaller more intimate hostels can often be the best place for meeting fellow travellers, as you will all get to know one another very quickly. They can often provide more quirky facilities, such as pizza nights, barbeques, pub crawls, designer rooms or even jacuzzis!
Discount Cards
There are a number of companies that offer backpacker discount cards which will get you special offers such as money off each night at an affiliated hostel, discounts on tours, food, bungee jumping, haircuts and all sorts. These are definitely worth purchasing if you intend to travel long-term in either Australia or New Zealand where they are widely accepted. The most widely accepted cards are: YHA, VIP Backpackers and Nomad.
